Dr Kewley is part of the Intercollegiate Group on Healthcare Standards for Children and Young People in Secure Settings (CYPSS) led by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
This is a leading project to develop and implement a set of standards for the planning and provision of healthcare for children and young people in secure settings by July 2013.
This is because children and young people in secure settings have significantly greater physical, emotional and mental health needs than their peers in the community. It is important that these health issues are address in order that their health outcomes can be improved and reoffending rates reduced.
It aims to:
- improve the healthcare of young people in secure settings so that it is equitable to that received by young people in the community
- facilitate better transfer of healthcare to the community or to adult secure settings
- increase the knowledge and skills of healthcare and non-healthcare staff in recognising and managing the health needs of young people in secure settings
- ensure young people in secure settings understand the healthcare they should expect to receive and contribute to the development of these standards
- improve the quality of service planning to ensure efficient and effective services
- strengthen the ability of regulators and inspectorates to assess the quality of healthcare provided
- inputs from a wide group of stakeholders will be sought for reference, clarification and implementation advice
